161 Eastern Road, South Melbourne is a high-end multi-residential project nestled between multiple midrise residential buildings and Albert Park Lake, only twenty minutes from Melbourne CBD.

This project exemplifies how density can improve local amenity when design excellence is prioritised at every level. 161 Eastern Road is a response to Melbournian’s increasing desire and need to pivot towards living in dense, well-connected suburbs with high degrees of amenity. There have been multiple challenges to overcome in the design process which have been tackled by active collaboration between KUD and the consultant team to successfully construct a building on a complicated site such as this.

KUD set out to prove that apartments can not only offer amenity on par with your typical freestanding home but challenged ourselves to outperform the status quo by curating a unique sense of address. Textured cantilevered balconies are offset from each other to create double heighted spaces that add drama to Eastern Road, flanked by strong linear elements that ground the whole composition. The use of quality materials, custom public art, and well thought out internal spaces as well as encouraging purchasers to customise their own apartments has reinforced a deep care for the end user in a ready desire to curate a unique home address.
