Ellingworth Parade is an 8-story office building located in the dynamic metropolitan activity centre of Box Hill. This project aimed to set a benchmark for high quality medium rise office development in urban infill sites, vital in meeting projections for Melbourne’s growing workforce in suburban centres such as Box Hill.

Located on a corner, the façade is constructed with a series of sculpted concrete modules that wrap around the building to present an engaging and continuous expression, anchoring the corner. The fluted and modulated façade creates depth and articulation to the building and simultaneously provides visual interest to the public realm. The modular concrete façade allows for an enhanced working environment internally through partial shading of the glazing helping to provide an overall reduction in glare and solar gain, whilst creating individual picture framed views of surrounding context. The fluid façade panels create a smooth transition from the tower to the podium with the curvilinear language encasing the totality of the building envelope. The convex glass base encourages activation for the pedestrian realm reflecting the aqua blue tones of the welkin above. This intervention provides a podium like demarcation of scale and translucency activation to the street.

Ellingworth Parade includes a selection of finishes and materials that reflect contemporary architectural form and design including an aqua colour palette translated through the glazing, perforated screens, and accented built elements. The white concrete façade complements the transparency of the glazing with a discrete yet elegant glass canopy cantilevering above the first floor, breaking down the mass of the street wall. This also ensures the building retains a human scale at street level whilst also providing some weather protection for pedestrians along the street frontage.

KUD collaborated with artist Juddy Roller to produce the breath-taking 6-storey mural which was inspired by the facade’s Tiffany blue colour palette. The mural contributes an eye-catching public art contribution that can be seen from all around the neighbourhood setting the benchmark for sophisticated urban design contributions to our public realm.
